The official rescue site of the Shar Pei Club of Great Britain

This page contains answers to common questions about adopting a Shar Pei, along with some tips and tricks that we have found useful and presented here as questions.

How do I adopt a Shar Pei... ?

The first step is to register with us either by registering on the website or by phoning one of the Welfare team.   We will take a history and background on your and your family, your lifestyle, details of other pets, ages of children etc, in order to match the right dog to the right family.

The next stage is to join the SPCGB.  We only home dogs to members of our club so you will need to join up with us.  A membership form will be sent to you and once that and your payment is received a home check will be arranged (please note all cheques must be made out to The Shar Pei Club of GB Welfare).  You can download a membership form from our main website.  Please note that it is a condition of Shar Pei Welfare and Rescue that you remain a member of the Club throughout the life of the adoption.

Once we have your membership, a home check will be carried out and all being well and all the criteria are met, we will match you with the next suitable dog.  You will have the opportunity to visit the dog and make a decision about whether this is the right dog for you.  Once the dog has joined you and your family, we are always on hand for advice and information.  And as a member of the Club you will get regular copies of The Wrinkle our club magazine which is full of useful information about the breed.

What does a home check involve ... ?

A home checker will call and ascertain the hours worked by the prospective owners, meet any other family members such as children and other pets or anyone involved in the day to day care of the dog.  They will check your garden is secure and that you have the facilities and the time to properly care for one of these loving animals.  (Home checkers are not interested in how often you do your housework or how tidy your home is, they are only interested in the dog's welfare.)

Why are Shar Pei in rescue.... ?

Rescue is a sad fact of life in any breed and the reasons for Shar Pei coming into rescue are many.  They vary from changes in circumstances such as marriage breakdown, redundancy and sometimes even death to owners who have just taken on more than they thought and can no longer cope with family demands and a dog.  Dog ownership is a huge responsibility and anyone considering taking on a dog should think very carefully before doing so.  Sometimes these rescue dogs are the product of bad breeding and may require a lifetime of special care and sometimes medication.  Shar Pei Rescue is always on hand with support and advice.

What are Shar Pei like as a breed ... ?

Before you even consider rehoming a shar pei, we would recommend that you read up on the breed.  We will be writing a guide to the breed shortly but in the meantime there are a number of good books and websites where information can be found.  Once you have read up on Shar Pei, please draw up a list of any unanswered questions and contact the Welfare team who will be happy to answer them.

Can I breed from my Shar Pei... ?

No.  The registration papers for rescued Shar Pei remain with the Shar Pei Club of Great Britain for the duration of the dog's life.  It is a condition of adoption that both male and female dogs (after a settling in period) must be speyed or castrated.  You will be asked to sign a contract agreeing to this condition before you receive your dog.

How much does adoption cost ... ?

We do not charge for placing dogs, but a donation of a minimum of £50 is expected from prospective adopters to cover administration and to enable us to carry on our work rescuing and rehoming these wonderful dogs.

  What if I'd like to help but I can't adopt a dog ... ?

We are always on the look out for new supporters.  On our help needed page, we've listed the areas we need help in.  If you feel you can lend a hand, please do get in touch.
